Seth Godin on how to get your ideas to spread
If we consider the gospel to be an “idea”, Christians know that they have been commissioned to spread it. But how? Many feel inadequate for the task and many have given up altogether.
One of the topics explored on this site is “movements”. Christianity began as, and is still meant to be, a multiplying missionary movement. How do movements spread? The same ways that ideas spread?
Consider this video. What can we learn?
Ideas that spread win
- Is that true? Think of examples of ideas that have spread and some that haven’t.
- Is this relevant to Christianity?
Simply interrupting people with your message is not working any longer
- Do you believe that is true? Is it no longer enough to simply put your message in front of people? Do people tend to simply ignore that now?
- What does this say about evangelism?
- What methods are churches currently using that might fall into this category?
- What different methods are churches using that are working?
The world revolves around me
- How true do you believe that is? Are people primarily interested only in themselves? Do we live in a consumer society where people only want what suits them?
- Do you agree that with this attitude and with more choices and less time, people ignore most of what is put in front of them?
- If people are accustomed to ignoring so much, what will get their attention?
- Something distinctive, different?
- Something that they believe will benefit them?
- How would you define “remarkable”? Does it have to include both being stunningly different in some way and worth remarking on?
- What motivates someone to tell others about something he/she has discovered?
- Do you agree that ideas spread person-to-person rather than through mass media?
- Is the gospel remarkable in the way you have understood it here? Why or why not?
- Is the gospel presented in a way that makes clear how remarkable it is? If not, what have we got wrong?
- Are people noticing it and saying, “remarkable!”?
- Does it stand out?
- Do people see it as having value for them?
- Are people remarking on it? Are people telling their friends?
- Do we have to be at the cutting edge of what is trendy for the gospel to be noticed?
- How else might we make the gospel noticeable? Is that the same as “fashionable”?
Seth Godin defines otaku as the desire of someone who is obsessed – desire that make that person pursue their passion.
He suggests companies do not market to the average person but to those who care i.e. the innovators etc who have otaku. They are still consumers but offer them something that they want and they will listen. Furthermore they might be passionate enough to tell others.
He also says that you then need to make it easy for them to tell their friends.
- Should Christians look for those who might be passionate about Jesus rather than the average person?
- Remembering that Godin said that the innovators might tell those elsewhere on the curve, is it a good strategy to target those with otaku and rely on them to influence others.
- Jesus told the disciples to look for the “man of peace” i.e. the person who is receptive rather than trying to persuade those who aren’t interested. Is this a similar strategy?
Safety is risky. Very good is average. No one will notice.
- Is the gospel so safe that it isn’t noticed?
- If not, what is it about the gospel that is “edgy”?
- How can it be presented as something better?
Find out who does care and sell them something.
- How might you take a new approach to evangelism?
- What will you do about it?
